Live Your Vision with Transitions

Roundtable Explores Cultural Considerations for Vision Care

CLAS Experts Provide Insight in Serving Minority Populations

With the changing face of the nation, more eyecare professionals are experiencing a culturally diverse patient base. Seeking to better understand how to overcome challenges to providing vision care to multicultural populations, Transitions Optical, Inc. brought together experts on the CLAS standards in health care for a roundtable – Cultural and Linguistic Considerations for Vision Care – on April 20 in Washington, D.C.

The event featured in-depth discussion on the CLAS (Culturally and Linguistic Appropriate Services) standards, which were developed by the Office of Minority Health to improve access to and quality of health care for minorities. During discussion, participants identified the need for all eyecare professionals to become more "culturally aware" to determine who their patients are and their specific needs, and to learn how to better communicate with them.

"We must remember that it's not just a pair of eyes – it's a human being," said Dr. Santiago. "Whether your patient speaks a different language, has a unique culture or is a small child, he or she deserves to be treated with respect and care."

The roundtable included presentations from CLAS experts Guadalupe Pacheco, M.S.W.; Charlotte Parniawski, R.N., M.S.N., C.N.E.; and Gayle Tang, R.N., M.S.N. and eyecare professionals Drake McLean, optician; Madeline Romeu, O.D.; Hector Santiago, O.D., Ph.D.; and Vincent Young, M.D.

A consensus paper based on the roundtable will be posted to the Transitions Web site and available through Transitions Customer Service upon completion.

Transitions Spotlights Healthy Sight at Family Circle Cup

Women's Tennis Tournament Sponsorship Provides Outreach Opportunity

Promoting the importance of vision health in sports, Transitions supported this year's Family Circle Cup, a premier women's tennis tournament held annually in Charleston, S.C., through a corporate sponsorship and education.

The 2009 Family Circle Cup, held April 11-19, attracted more than 87,000 attendees who watched as world-class players Nadia Petrova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands won the doubles tournament, and 19-year-old Sabine Liciski captured the singles trophy. Throughout the tournament, Transitions distributed 3,000 brochures at the Family Circle Tent and demonstrated how Transitions® lenses work at an on-site booth. Through a partnership with US Vision, Transitions also conducted free lens cleanings and vision screenings at the tournament.

As a corporate sponsor, Transitions had a strong advertising presence on-site through outdoor and print ads as well as on the tournament's Web site. Transitions television commercials ran during the tournament's broadcast on ESPN2 and created more than 1 million impressions with consumers. Transitions Launches Live Your Vision Contest

Reinforces Importance of Healthy Sight to Healthy Living

Transitions wants you and your patients to show how you "Live Your Vision" through our newest national promotion – and have the chance to win cash prizes to help you reach your goals.

Now through Sept. 15 you and your patients can enter the "Live Your Vision" contest by uploading a photo and caption to www.Transitions.com/liveyourvision that exemplifies how you live your vision in your professional or personal lives.

Online voting will be conducted Sept. 15 through Oct. 31 to determine the top 15 entries in both consumer and eyecare professional categories, which will move on to the judging phase. The judges, who include National Geographic photographer Steve Winter, will select one grand prize winner and four finalists in each category.

Entries will be based on the photo's demonstration of how entrants "live their vision" rather than on the basis of photo quality alone. Grand prize winners will receive a $10,000 prize, and will designate a charity of their choice to receive a $10,000 donation from Transitions Optical, and eight lucky finalists will receive $1,000.

To continue the dialogue about healthy sight post-purchase, Transitions is also sponsoring "Take Your Shot," an instant win game open to participants with a valid Certificate of Authenticity (COA) from Transitions. Consumers who register their Transitions® lenses using their COA will be eligible to play the interactive instant win game that offers $100 daily prizes. Additionally, each time an eyecare professional location or a customer registers for the promotion, a donation will be made to a charity supported by the Transitions® Healthy Sight for Life Fund.
